Participating in Interscholastic athletics, at Greenon Local Schools,
is a privilege, not a right. Participation in athletics requires the
student athlete and parent/guardian to read, understand and follow the
rules, policies, and guidelines set forth by Greenon Local Schools and
the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA).
The following
guide gives the student athlete and their parents/guardians the
information needed to participate in Greenon athletics.
Grade Requirements
Athletes at Greenon are first of all—students. Athletes are required to maintain the following OHSAA mandated grade standards:
- - Eligibility is determined by the immediately proceeding nine week grading period (does not include summer school).
- - Athletes must have a minimum of a 1.5 grade point average.
- - Athletes must be passing a minimum of five (5) one-credit courses, or the equivalent.
- - Physical Education DOES NOT count towards the five credit requirement.
- - Eligibility for fall sports is determined by the fourth quarter grades of the preceding school year.
- - Classes made up in summer school DO NOT count towards fall eligibility.
- -
Students that are home schooled or are taking post secondary classes
are required to submit grades to the Athletic Department, at the end of
each Greenon grading period, to maintain eligibility.
Participation Fee
Athletes
are required to pay a participation fee to play sports at Greenon. Fees
are to be paid to the bookkeeper in the Guidance Office at the High
School.
- - Middle School Fee - $50.00 per sport.
- - High School Fee - $100.00 per sport.
- - Family Cap - $225.00
Risks of Participation in Athletics
There
are many physical and social benefits to participating in sports.
However, the student athlete and parent/guardian need to understand
there are inherent risks in athletic participation. The risks include,
but are not limited to, sprains, fractures, and ligament and/or
cartilage damage which could result in a temporary or permanent, partial
or complete impairment in the use of limbs, brain damage, paralysis, or
even death. Risks may also include exposure to blood borne pathogens,
such as HIV and hepatitis.
Annual Physical Requirement
An
annual physical is required to participate in sports at Greenon Local
Schools. Physicals are good for one year from the date the doctor signed
the physical. A copy of the physical must be on file in the athletic
office before a student athlete can participate in athletics, including
practices.
Medical Insurance
Medical insurance
is required for participation in interscholastic athletics. If an
athlete is currently not covered by medical insurance, it can be
purchased through the school.
Required Reading
There are a
number of publications that the school, OHSAA, and the State of Ohio
require that athletes and parent/guardians read. The Student Athlete
Participation Contract lists and outlines all of the required documents.
To streamline the process of reading and signing each of the required
documents the Student Athlete Participation Contract was developed.
Athletes
and parent/guardians now are only required to sign the contract,
stating that they have read and understand the various documents, rather
than signing and returning the numerous forms required by various
groups. Copies of each of the documents covered in the contract can be
found under the Forms section on the Athletics page of the school website.
The documents that are included in the contract are:
Forms to Give Your Coach
The athlete should give the following forms to the coach prior to the first practice.
- - Completed physical, unless there is a current one on file in the Athletic Department.
- - Signed Student Athlete Participation Contract.
- -
Emergency Medical Form. These are only required for fall sports. For
all other seasons the Athletic Department will make a copy of the school
emergency medical form for the coach.
